Congressional Black Caucus Chair Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) will lead a press conference Wednesday afternoon in opposition to what the caucus calls President Trump’s “big, ugly bill.“
The Senate passed its version of the tax and spending bill Tuesday after days of debate and internal division, sending the megabill back to the House. Republicans in the lower chamber can only afford to lose three votes if they hope to get it to Trump’s desk by the self-imposed July 4 deadline.
Democrats have done their best to make voting uncomfortable for Republican holdouts, primarily those in fragile battleground districts. The reconciliation package as it stands includes sweeping cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It also extends the president’s 2017 tax cuts while targeting green initiatives.
“All we need are four Republicans — just four — to show John-McCain-level courage,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said during a press conference earlier Wednesday.
The caucus’s press conference is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EDT.
