South Carolina Ports has officially completed a $55 million expansion at Inland Port Greer, enhancing its capacity and efficiency to support growing cargo demand. The project, which expands container yard space by 50% and adds 9,000 feet of rail, will allow the inland port to handle up to 300,000 rail lifts annually—positioning it to meet market needs through 2040.

“This expansion strengthens our ability to move cargo efficiently between the Port of Charleston and inland markets,” said SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin. “With South Carolina’s rapid economic and population growth, these investments ensure we stay ahead of demand.”
Inland Port Greer has seen a staggering 355% cargo growth over the past decade, averaging 16% annual increases. The facility’s strategic location along the I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte enables seamless movement of goods for manufacturers, retailers, and consumer goods industries.
The project was partially funded by a $25 million BUILD grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, with support from the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Norfolk Southern, and BMW. The expansion aligns with SC Ports’ broader growth plans, including the Navy Base Intermodal Facility, set to open in 2025.
With SC Ports generating a $44 billion economic impact in the Upstate annually and supporting over 132,000 jobs, Inland Port Greer’s enhancements will play a crucial role in sustaining South Carolina’s competitive edge in global trade.
