Bayswater Education, a global network of colleges, has snapped up the city’s oldest independent language school, Leeds English Language School, which was founded in 2001. Its current owners, Bob Charlton and Mike Corbett, will stay with the institution to support the transition before moving on towards new ventures.
The deal marks Bayswater’s 11th global campus and its second in northern England. Now with five locations across the country, the group also operates campuses in Canada, South Africa, Cyprus, and France, offering a range of English and career-focused courses.
“Joining forces with Bayswater opens up new opportunities for our students and staff,” said Charlton. “We are thrilled to become part of an organisation that shares our values and vision for the future of education.”

From September 2025, the school will be renamed Bayswater Leeds and moved to a centrally located campus. The new Leeds campus will feature modern classrooms, dedicated student support services, and an extensive social programme designed to immerse students into British culture and make the most of their time in the city.
Future plans include the introduction of micro-credential programmes, such as digital marketing and international business, aligning with Leeds’s growing status as a major hub for business and technology in the North of England.
All current staff at the school will remain in place, ensuring continuity and support for the existing student body of more than 50 learners.
Bayswater’s leadership team has strong links to Leeds, which is the fourth largest city in the UK. Bayswater’s CEO Stephan Roussounis grew up in Leeds and now lives nearby, while the group’s director James Herbertson is a Leeds University alumni.
“We are incredibly excited to bring Bayswater Education to Leeds,” said Roussounis. “Leeds is a dynamic, multicultural city with a thriving student population and a strong economic outlook. Its excellent transport links and rich cultural heritage make it an ideal location for international students looking to improve their English and gain valuable professional skills.”
