For Khushboo Aggarwal , her decision to join the University of Groningen in the Netherlands was a difficult but necessary one.
“Living in the Netherlands has been a blessing for me and has made me a lot more independent,” the Master in Media Studies student says. “I can say I feel a lot more whole as an individual since living in Groningen and finding my own way in this beautiful city.”
Situated in the economic and cultural centre of the northern part of the Netherlands, the University of Groningen is a top 100 institution where students become leaders in their own path – like graduate Ben Feringa, who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the molecular machine and Professor Frits Zernike with his invention of the phase contrast microscope before him.
Anyone can follow in their footsteps. Tuition is affordable for students from the US, about half the cost of the average American tuition. Depending on which faculty you enrol in, tuition fees range from around US$13,900 per academic year to US$33,100 for Medicine and Dentistry programmes.

Such affordable rates do not come at the expense of quality. The University of Groningen is home to groundbreaking research and top-quality graduate programmes – the kind that puts you at the forefront of your chosen field and on your tailored path to success. “The media industry is becoming heavily reliant on data, so it was good to have hands-on experience with data analysis software in multiple courses,” Aggarwal says. “I also learned a lot of creation tools when I was tasked with making multimodal media such as podcasts, short films, stories, campaigns, and more.”
Some programmes even include on-campus work. “This employment helped me straddle the line between the demands of the industry and the theories taught in the classroom,” says Aggarwal, who also works in the university’s Social Media team. “Besides that, I learned how to function in a collaborative environment and how to be a productive team member, which might be one of the most important skills to have for any career.”
Aggarwal’s chosen programme, Media Creation and Innovation, is one of the four tracks of MA Media Studies Journalism, Datafication and Digital Literacy, and Social Media and Society, among others). It is offered by the Faculty of Arts, one of the 11 faculties that make up the University of Groningen:
Each faculty offers a variety of programmes at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels – including a wide selection of English-taught graduate programmes. In fact, English is widely spoken in the Netherlands, so you can learn and live in the country comfortably without having to face any language barrier.

The University of Groningen is home to 9,400 international students – who better to explore one of the happiest cities in Europe? Students make up half of bustling Groningen’s population and they love the city for its cultural events just as much as its homey feel. “Dutch people, in my opinion, have been super helpful in making this experience even better. Groningen quickly became my home, and since it is a student city, I met a lot of people whom I now call my friends,” Aggarwal says.
