Practice reading in English.
Make a habit of reading as much as possible in English. Whether it’s magazines, online articles, or full novels, any English reading will help you become more comfortable and quicker at reading.

During the test, extract key items of information.
Avoid trying to memorize information! The CELPIP Test is not a memory exam. You won’t need to recall information from one section in another. Instead of memorizing, read carefully and focus on extracting key ideas and important details. Also, practice drawing conclusions from context.

Change up your reading strategies.
You don’t have to read every single word in the article to answer the questions successfully; instead, use reading strategies such as skimming and scanning as you go through each section of the Reading Test. First, skim the text to grasp the main idea. Then, read the questions and find key words for which you can scan the text. These reading strategies may help you with some of the simpler questions, leaving more time for the more difficult ones.

Don’t stress about unfamiliar words.
It’s okay if you don’t understand every word in a text, because you don’t need to grasp everything to get the main ideas and answer the questions. If you come across a word you don’t know, try to figure out its meaning from the context within the sentence or the entire passage. If that doesn’t work, skip the difficult word and keep reading.

Try to guess what the correct answer is before you read the options.
After reading a question, it can be helpful to think of the correct answer before reviewing all the options. If you believe you already know the answer, try to find a multiple-choice option that aligns with your initial instinct.

Tailor your answers to the passages.
Although you may not be familiar with the topic of a passage, on the CELPIP Test, you can always find all the answers in the passage. Therefore, you don’t need any in-depth knowledge about the topic. If you are familiar with a topic used in the test, be careful! Remember that what you know might be different from the information in the text, so make sure that you still answer the questions based on the passage you read.

If you are unsure, make your best guess!
Answer all the Reading Test questions. There is no penalty for incorrect responses on the CELPIP Reading Test. If you don’t know an answer, try to eliminate the options you know are wrong, and then your chances of guessing the correct answer increase.

Keep an eye on your time.
Keep track of the time and ensure you have enough time to complete all the questions in each section. Remember that each part of the Reading Test includes a passage to read and several questions based on it. Avoid spending all your time reading the passage, as you also need time to understand the questions and answer choices. Make sure you allocate enough time to answer every question.

Check and re-check your answers.
Before moving on to the next question on the Reading Test, ensure that you have selected your answer. This is important because in many parts of the Reading Test, there is no opportunity to go back and change your answer.
