From May 23, 2025, certain travelers to Japan can apply online for a 90-day stay without visiting a Japanese embassy or consulate. The eVisa program is currently available to nationals of Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Some other countries have specific procedures in place for visa applications.
Unlike traditional visas, which are placed as physical stickers in a passport, the eVisa involves receiving a “Visa Issuance Notice,” which is a digital document that travelers must present during check-in at the airport. Importantly, travelers must show this document from a live, internet-connected device at check-in—printed copies, PDFs, or screenshots are not accepted.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the Japan eVisa, you must meet the following requirements:
- Your visit must be for tourism purposes only.
- You must hold an ordinary passport.
- You should apply online through the official Japan eVisa portal or through an accredited travel agency in certain countries.
- Upon approval, you’ll receive a digital notice that must be shown on your device at the airport.
