On May 22, 2025, USCIS announced it is partnering with the Social Security Administration to verify citizenship using Social Security numbers through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program.
- Previously, government officials could only assess an individual’s immigration status using their DHS identification numbers.
- USCIS explained that the expanded system updates are in line with President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.
With the update, state and local authorities will be able to create cases in SAVE, enabling them to input Social Security numbers (SSNs) to verify US citizenship for US elections. Before the policy change, the SAVE program only included information regarding immigration status and naturalized or acquired US citizenship.
